SVTS A Series - Slip Ring with Optic Fibre

Merocledì, 20 Marzo 2019

www.servotecnica.com

Slip Ring con fibra ottica per applicazioni outdoor

Slip rings are used to transfer signals or electrical power from a fixed structure to a mobile one while allowing continuous rotation and thus preventing electrical cables being subjected to mechanical torsion. The standout feature of Servotecnica miniaturised slip rings is that they are lightweight and small, but without compromising their reliability, service life, or the quality of transmission. They have an outer diameter of as little as 5 mm, and can transmit up to 10 different electrical signals using teflon cables with silver alloy plated wires to increase their signal transmission power. The rings and brushes are in a gold alloy for low wear, as well as making them able to transmit even high frequency signals (up to 1 GHz) with complete stability.

To ensure that such a small component is mechanically robust enough for the application, the housing is made in stainless steel. They are also equipped with dual ball bearings to ensure that the brushes and rings are perfectly aligned and minimise resistant torque at speeds up to 100 rpm for smooth operation.

Our slip rings guarantee signal transmission even in very small footprint applications. They are particularly suited to use on robot arms, electric locks and micro cable winders, and offer excellent value for money.

MAC® and ServoStep: EtherCAT with CiA drive profile

Merocledì, 30 Gennaio 2019

www.jvl.dk

MAC e ServoStep - EtherCAT con profilo drive CiA
EtherCAT (Ethernet) con profilo drive CiA402 per motore MAC® e ServoStep

Ready for Industry 4.0 and IIoT (Industrial IoT)

The JVL EtherCAT module is equipped with two Ethernet connectors and a built-in switch, enabling line, star, tree and ring topology without any extra expensive hardware. The JVL EtherCAT module has several LEDs, enabling technicians and operators to get a quick status overview. There are also opto-isolated digital I/Os embedded in the module, enabling control of extra sensors etc. without external I/O modules. This minimizes the number of devices on the net and reduces cable costs.
All connectors are rugged M12 connectors suitable for the rough conditions in industrial environments.
Furthermore, all registers in the JVL MAC motor® are accessible via the EtherCAT connection, thereby enabling complete control of motor configuration and motion.
The JVL EtherCAT module is very easy to use and configure via a predefined setup, and commissioning is easy using the JVL MacTalk application software.

EtherCAT Industrial Ethernet

The EtherCAT module with CiA402 drive profile for JVL servo and stepper motors support the synchronized position (CSP) and synchronized velocity (CSV) modes as well as the old modes profile position, profile velocity and many homing methods. The synchronized cycle times for MIS Integrated Stepper can be 1, 2, 3 and 4mS. MAC Integrated Servomotor have 1 and 2mS cycle times. Both have a maximum of ±1µs of jitter.
The JVL EtherCAT equipped motors are plug and play compatible with Beckhoff PLC’s, and also compatible with other manufacturers of EtherCAT masters such as Omron, Lenze, Trio and others.
Read more here: www.EtherCAT.org.

Practical Features

Cabling is a hassle? Using the onboard Ethernet-switch you can daisy-chain cables from one EtherCAT motor to the next, enabling line and ring topology without any extra expensive hardware.
On the motor-side, one of the big advantages of using integrated servo motors or stepper motors from JVL, is that you do not need to install a separate servo driver or controller in a control cabinet. This gives you many subsequent advantages: Space savings in your control cabinet, saving of expensive motor and encoder cables, saving time (and money) for cabling, noise is minimized due to internal cabling, and installation errors between driver and motor are eliminated.
In addition, service is much easier, since the motor and controller can be replaced as a single integrated unit. Hence, downtime is minimized and production is maximized.
Quite uniquely on the market, users can even change Ethernet protocol by updating the firmware using the MacTalk software.

Serie 1660...BHx - High Performance in the palm of your hands

Merocledì, 09 Magio 2018

www.faulhaber.com

Serie 1660...BHx - High Performance in the palm of your hands

The new 1660 ... BHx series sets new standards: with respect to dimensions and weight, it delivers high speed and power values with low vibration and heat development, something inconceivable until recently. This drive series is thereby predestined for handpieces with high power requirements in applications with limited installation space.

The BHx series made by FAULHABER are new high power slotless brushless motors in 16 mm diameter based on a 2-pole technology. Through their robust, compact design and outstanding performance data, the motors of this new product family are particularly well suited for demanding applications like dental handpieces, medical robotics and electrical grippers, as well as laboratory equipment, professional handtools or robotics.

In order to fit at best the large variety of different application needs, the BHx series comes with two different motor designs, both in 60 mm length, respectively designed for high speed and high torque.

The 1660…BHS Series is capable to operate at speeds up to 100,000 rpm and delivers an exceptional power of 96 W to satisfy the most demanding application. The 1660…BHS is the ideal solution for devices running for long period of time while preserving a low housing temperature like for high speed handtools.

In addition, the 1660…BHT series can provide a continuous output torque close to 19 mNm with the ability to manage variable loads. Their flat speed-torque curve as low as 95 rpm/mNm helps to minimize speed fluctuation to ensure constant speed and smooth behaviour. For specific applications the motor can generate impulsive torque above 30 mNm, traditionally such high performance levels were only achieved by much larger motor sizes. Those attributes make the 1660…BHT series the perfect solution for recurring intermittent use with high dynamic and also for accurate positioning.

With their long form factor and low-vibration and quiet operation, both 1660…BHS and 1660…BHT series are particularly well suited for quiet handtools, which reduce user fatigue when used for long periods of time. The low rotor inertia enables fine motor control by drive electronics and makes their operation very smooth

Motori miniaturizzati con BiSS - FAULHABER

Standardisation, miniaturisation and robustness

The bidirectional sensor interface BiSS has established itself as a global open-source standard in the field of drive technology. The range of applications spans from motor feedback and servo drives to motion controllers and position encoders as well as manufacturing robotics and CNC machines. The drive specialist FAULHABER (cf. company box) has been actively involved with the open-source interface since the beginning. Miniaturised drives whose encoders communicate with the corresponding motion controllers via BiSS-C have been used successfully for years. It is therefore only natural that the drive specialist was among the founding members of the BiSS Association e.V., which was established in September 2017.

Robust and future-proof

As a digital and bidirectional interface, BiSS offers numerous advantages for absolute measurement systems: with its high transfer rate, it is ideally suited for dynamic axes with high accelerations and for uniform speed control with high positioning accuracy. Because the BiSS interface transfers the interface signals differentially, a high transfer reliability is achieved. Furthermore, the standardised interface can be implemented cost-effectively in applications because there are no licensing fees. Also decisive for the manufacturer of microdrives is the fact that the compact chips can easily be integrated, even with miniaturised absolute encoders. For example, the AES magnetic absolute encoder – specially designed for use in brushless DC micromotors – came onto the market in 2010. This was then followed in 2013 with the AESM series: very compact absolute encoders which fit even on miniaturised, brushless DC drives with a diameter of just 8 mm (figure). For the future, the new BiSS Line in 1-Cable-Technology transfer technology offers further potential for miniaturisation. With this, only 2 instead of 8 signals are needed for the sensor interface, and data from other sensors, such as from integrated temperature sensors, can also be transferred.

FAULHABER specializes in the development, production and application of high-precision small and miniaturized drive systems, servo components and drive electronics with an output power of up to 200 Watts. The product range includes brushless motors, DC micromotors, stepper motors, encoders, gearheads, and drive electronics. In addition, FAULHABER also offers completely solutions for, among others, medical technology, automatic placement machinery, precision optics, telecommunications, aerospace and robotics. FAULHABER has more than 1,900 employees worldwide.

New Torque Motors with small diameters - Tecnotion
Tecnotion introduced a new series of smaller QTR torque motors at the SPS IPC Drives 2017. A new 65 mm and 78 mm diameter motor make the quality and torque of Tecnotion QTR series motor available for even smaller applications.

Central in the development of the new 65 and 78 mm motors is the low axial height and high torque density, known of existing Tecnotion QTR motors. A special rotor design allows for the large inner diameter. This makes it possible to use hollow axles, even for the QTR 65 motor. Four different stator heights are available for each diameter. The small QTR motors therefore suit a wide variety of markets including semiconductor, medical, machine tooling and robotics.
QTR 65 and QTR 78 motors have a brushless design. No mecha
nical transmission is needed. Torque ranges from 0.3-2.3 Nm continuous for the QTR 65 and 0.6-4.7 Nm continuous for the QTR 78. Speed ranges from 410-6200 rpm at just 48 volts.

To provide maximum flexibility and integration the QTR 65 and QTR 78 use flying leads instead of a power cable.

So far the UC3 was only available with a side cable exit. The UC3 is now also available with a cable in travel direction. The UC3 inline does not differ from its twin in terms of technical data, but the power cable is run in the direction of travel and not on the side. As a result, there is a greater flexibility of design. The space required can be reduced above or on the side of the yoke (depending on the type of mounting) and can be made even narrower.

I sensori Zettlex sulla Stazione Spaziale Internazionale

Lunedì, 12 Giugno 2017

www.zettlex.com

I sensori Zettlex sulla Stazione Spaziale Internazionale
Long periods in the microgravity of space can have severe effects on an astronaut’s body. To counter these effects, crew members on the International Space Station must exercise intensively for 2-3 hours per day. Whilst traditional gym equipment might work well on earth, in space things are not so straightforward. The bulk of traditional gym equipment effectively prohibits a space launch and any normal weights machine effectively becomes useless. In space, running on a normal treadmill would likely only produce comical results.

Understanding the effects of space on the human body is an important area of medical research and establishing how exercise keeps astronauts healthy is important in enabling humans to remain in space. This is a critical area for longer range manned missions, most notably to Mars. Accurate and reliable data on an astronaut’s exercise intensity, speed and duration is valuable scientific data.

Zettlex IncOders were selected by NASA scientists as the critical control elements for a new generation of high-tech fitness equipment now being used by crew members on the International Space Station.

Mark Howard, Zettlex General Manager comments: “Perhaps fitness equipment is not the first piece of scientific apparatus that one might consider for the International Space Station. However, it’s crucial to the health and well-being of astronauts and we were delighted that Zettlex products were selected for this important project. Our products had to undergo a long and rigorous qualification process and I’m pleased to say that we passed with flying colours.”

Cllr Peter Topping, Leader of South Cambridgeshire District Council comments: “It’s great to see Zettlex sensors picked for such a vital piece of equipment. Their technology is world-leading and making a name for South Cambridgeshire innovation on the global stage. Zettlex is an exceptional example of the kind of high-tech, high-growth business that the Council is proud to support and wants to see thriving.”

It’s likely that Major Tim Peake will be putting NASA’s new fitness equipment through its paces on his next visit to the International Space Station in 2019

La missione di rifornimento del satellite NASA procede con l’aiuto del Giunto Rotante DSTI

La missione di rifornimento del satellite NASA procede con l’aiuto del Giunto Rotante DSTI
More than 1,000 operational satellites currently in orbit will one day run out of fuel and burn up in our atmosphere as they fall back towards Earth or remain space debris forever.

Costing tens of millions of dollars each launch, satellites have a limited lifespan restricted by their fuel tank capacity. However, with NASA's continued research, servicing and refueling missions may become a realistic option to drastically extend their life.

In 2011, DSTI's mission-critical fluid rotary unions were on-board NASA's space shuttle Atlantis delivering tools to the International Space Station (ISS) for the Robotic Refueling Mission (RRM); an experiment to demonstrate and test tools, technologies and techniques needed to robotically service satellites in space.

After two years of preparation, RRM successfully completed the first robotic refueling task by transferring a simulated spacecraft propellant across a common spacecraft fill and drain valve.

"We were thrilled with the performance during testing of DSTI's early rotary union prototype units for RRM. Even under pressure, they ran with almost zero parasitic torque," says Matt Ashmore, Mechanical Engineer for NASA/Orbital ATK's Satellite Servicing Projects Division.

Today, preparation is underway for the final RRM mission, during which the ISS's dexterous robot, equipped with a revised DSTI rotary union design, will use supplied tools to demonstrate refueling using actual cryogen liquid.

With all of this effort leading up to the 2020 Restore-L mission to launch a robotic spacecraft to refuel a live satellite, success will demonstrate servicing and refueling technologies are ready for incorporation into other NASA missions as well as encourage other commercial entities to help build a domestic satellite servicing industry.

Slip Rings per Turbine Eoliche IP65

Slip Rings per Turbine Eoliche IP65

As the need to generate renewable forms of energy becomes more and more pressing, wind turbines offer one of the most promising solutions as a source of green power — indeed production is expected to grow by 30% per annum in the foreseeable future.

The construction of a wind turbine dictates that power and electrical control signals need to be transferred from the tower, anchored in the soil, to the nacelle at the top. This is done by means of slip rings.
The experience acquired by Servotecnica in this sector has led to the development of increasingly targeted solutions, designed specifically for this type of use.

  • Slip ring electrical rotary joints of the SVTS E serieshave an outer structure guaranteeing:
  • Mechanical stability — with different types of anti-rotation available
  • Protection against electromagnetic interference — thanks to the materials employed
  • Stable performance in the face of varying ambient temperature
  • Enclosure rating IP65

The distinguishing feature of Servotecnica slip rings is the innovative system adopted for manufacturing the brushes. The usual method is the adoption of carbon brushes, which bring the drawbacks of lubricants, bulky dimensions, rapid wear, and scheduled maintenance needed to remove the carbon dust generated by wear on the brushes, which can cause electrical signals to deteriorate.

Servotecnica slip rings feature fibre bundle technology using precious metals, which means no lubricants, a more compact assembly, no need for routine servicing and, moreover, no need for preventive maintenance, by virtue of the fact that brush wear is minimal and the amount of debris generated practically negligible.

Another key factor helping to improve signal quality is the actual structure of the brushes: the points of contact are proportionate to the number of fibres utilized, and can be as many as 10, each fibre establishing an individual contact.
A further plus point of this superior technology is the capacity to withstand transient overloads, generally around twice higher than those that can be handled by slip rings with carbon brushes.

An encoder ensures accurate positional feedback, and wires can be routed out either directly, or using a connector with enclosure rating IP65.

Nuovo micromotore brushless 1935..BRC
With the 1935…BRC brushless DC-Motor, the motor manufacturer FAULHABER has brought an all around optimized version of the successful product 1935…BRE on the market. The new motor achieves a continuous torque of 3.5 mNm while still retaining its compact design, making it more powerful than its predecessor model. Its direction of rotation is reversible. At the same time, the speed range was increased to 1,000 to 11,000 min-1 and the efficiency was further improved. The temperature range has also increased significantly, ranging from -25 C to 85 C. The new high-performance bearings allow for a prolonged service life. The proven connection concept of the 1525...BRC and 3153...BRC series was now standardised in the 1935...BRC.

The 1935…BRC has an integrated Speed Controller and thus its own electronic control. This facilitates speed control by means of a PI controller with external setpoint input. With its dimensions of 19 mm in diameter and 35 mm in length, the motor is adapted for installation in very restricted spaces and thanks to its rugged design it is suitable for applications with high loads. An integrated current limiting protects the motor from overload, the controller setting can be parametrized via the programming adapter. Typical fields of application of the 1935…BRC are primarily applications in pumps, for example for laboratory devices, inkjet printers, medical technology and diagnostics, fuel cells or in battery-powered systems. It can also be used in robotics, tool technology, industry automation, as well as measurement and testing technology.

High performance at low voltage thanks to the UC3 and TM3z Linear Motors by Tecnotion

Merocledì, 18 Gennaio 2017

www.tecnotion.com

Alte prestazione a bassa tensione con i Motori Lineari UC3 e TM3z di Tecnotion
Tecnotion, the direct drive specialist offers both small iron core and ironless linear motors for low voltage purposes. In addition to 230 Vac and 400 Vac motors for industrial applications, drives are often sought for low-voltage applications of 60Vdc and less.
Iron core linear motor with low voltage Z winding
Tecnotion’s TM3z and TM6z have been customized for use at 48Vac but can be used up to 400Vac. These motors have a special winding to allow traverse speeds of up to 5 m/s at 48Vac, depending on bus voltage. They have the same characteristics as their high voltage siblings:
  • A continuous force of 60N to 120N
  • Peak force of 105N to 210N
  • Low attraction force between the coil unit and magnet plate
  • and a very small footprint for applications with little space available.
Ironless linear motors (UC and UF series)
UC and UF series ironless linear motors operate standard at 60Vdc. A total of four motors are available in the UC and UF series. The motors cover continuous forces from 10N to 39N and peak forces between 36N and 85N. Installation dimensions are very small with a 51mm and 53mm width and a maximum of 16mm in height (horizontal mounting). A major advantage of the ironless motors compared to their iron core counterparts, is the absence of cogging, resulting in pinpoint accuracy.
Possible applications are, for example, in medical equipment, robotics, laser engraving machines or in the field of packaging, as well as in applications in which low voltage is required because of operator or customer safety. Due to less restrictive design-standards, the use of low voltage drives can save on design, assembly and commissioning costs.

New IP65 Slip Ring for Flow Pack Machines

Lunedì, 28 Novembre 2016

www.servotecnica.com

Nuovi Slip Rings IP65 per Confezionatrici Flow Pack

A new family of Electrical Rotary Joints (also called Slip Rings) is now part of the range of solutions that Servotecnica proposes with a particular focus on flow pack packaging machines. The new SVTS B 03 IP65 Slip Ring was designed for a quick and reliable integration on packaging machines and it joins the current SVTS B series.

Thanks to the 3 x 20 A circuits, it is possible to power the resistances of the rotating blades, while the 2 signal circuits guarantee transmission of temperature values detected by the thermal sensors. The use of multifiber brush technology and rings made of precious metal alloy, allow to maintain the electrical characteristics of the circuits while guaranteeing the same results of the SVTS B series.

The through-hole with a 22mm diameter allows this rotating collector to be installed directly on the shaft of the rotating blade, while the mechanical connection is easily obtained through 4 M3 set screws.

The multi-strand contact technology extend the life of the joint to approximately 100 million revolutions. Particular attention was also given to the wiring that takes place by passing the wires through cable glands that are then subsequently connected to the brushes and the rings of the slip ring through threaded terminals; these elements and the addition of a seal (O-Ring) on the rotating shaft, guarantee an IP65 degree of protection to the Slip Ring.

The IP65 SVTS D model was designed to guarantee quick installation and minimum maintenance, all of this with a very competitive price/performance ratio.

This innovative Slip Ring is therefore the ideal solution where ease of installation, aggressive price, performance, high durability and a high degree of protection are all key points that contribute to the design and sale of a successful application.

New High Precision Incremental Encoders IER3 IERS3

Lunedì, 28 Novembre 2016

www.faulhaber.com

Nuovi encoder incrementali IER3 e IERS3 ad elevata precisione

FAULHABER expands its portfolio with the high-precision IER3 and IERS3 encoders. Both encoders deliver 2 channel quadrature signals and an additional index signal. The encoders are highly precise thanks to the optical measuring principle. Regarding accuracy and signal quality they stand out compared to encoders with other measuring principles. A FAULHABER DC-micromotor or brushless DC-Servomotor can be positioned with a typical accuracy of 0.1° – 0.3° with the IER3 and IERS3. The encoders are therefore the ideal solution for high-precision positioning applications. The encoders can be combined with the graphite-commutated FAULHABER DC-micromotor of series CXR and CR starting with a diameter of 22 mm and with the brushless DC-servomotors of series BX4 and BP4.

The encoders are exceptionally compact and light in comparison to other optical encoders. The encoders are an opto-reflective system as a single-chip solution: As the LED, photodetectors, analysis unit and interpolation levels are installed in one chip, the encoders take up very little space. The diameter-compliant IER3 and IERS3 encoders are mechanically identical and compatible with the magnetic FAULHABER IE3 encoder. They lengthen the motors only from 15.5 to 18.5 mm.

Both encoders are also available with Line Driver as the IER3 L and IERS3 L. The Line Driver generates complementary output signals and makes the transmission of data particularly resistant to electrical interference especially in encoders with long connecting cables.

The IER3 sets the standard and provides the highest resolution for its class with a resolution of up to 10,000 lines per revolution. The encoder achieves an angular resolution of 0.009° with the evaluation of 40,000 edges per revolution. The high resolution results in very high control dynamics and very precise speed control. A multitude of further resolution variants are available. The IERS3-500 provides resolutions of 250 and 500 lines per revolution.

The IER3 and IERS3 optical encoders are perfectly suited to demanding positioning applications such as those in medical technology, laboratory automation, measuring technology or in optical systems due to very high accuracy and repeatability. The optical encoders can also be used in automation technology, for example, in semiconductor manufacturing or in robotics.

As the optical encoders are resistant to strong magnetic interferences, they are also well suited for applications with magnetic interferences such as in tomography or image processing.

New Slip Ring with single pneumatic passage

Venerdì, 25 Novembre 2016

www.servotecnica.com

Nuovo Slip Ring con singolo passaggio pneumatico

The complexity of modern machinery increasingly requires the use of an Electrical Rotary Joint combined with an air passage, for applications like rotating tables, work centres, in robotics or in cable winding systems.

With the new 0P1 and 0P2 options that can be paired to the SVTS C 05 series, Servotecnica proposes a solution designed to meet these needs. The model is based on the integration of an SVTS C 05 electric rotary joint, inside which there is a single pneumatic rotating passage with 6 or 10mm quick coupling that can withstand pressures of 1 MPa - that is, 10 Bar - and speeds up to 300 rpm.

Top performance is ensured by attention to detail. These slip rings are built with metal-metal technology, that is, with brushes and rings covered in a layer of silver alloy; this allows disturbance-free electrical signals to be transmitted, ensuring ring duration of up to 108 revolutions without maintenance. The number of electrical circuits goes from a minimum of 6 up to a maximum of 24 with a capacity of up to 15 A and voltages of 600 VAC/VDC. Three versions of protection are available: the standard IP51 and 2 others in IP54 and IP65 version.

This solution is directed to anyone looking for a quick and ready solution with minimum delivery times. However, we can develop customised solutions with more circuits or requiring more complex signals like EtherNet or EtherNet/IP fieldbus with bandwidths up to 1 GB/s. We can also customise the pneumatic part with multiple passages, both of air and fluids or mixed.

Servotecnica's technical team is always available to find the best solution in terms of cost and performance that fully meet the needs of our customers.

Innovation goes hand in hand

Venerdì, 29 Luglio 2016

www.faulhaber.com

Innovation goes hand in hand

Tie shoelaces, fold bed linen, tear open a bag of crisps – the list of things that are difficult to do with one hand goes on and on. People with a congenital amputation or who have lost a hand due to an accident are confronted with such obstacles every day. To make daily life easier, the British company Steeper developed the Bebionic myoelectric hand prosthesis. Powerful FAULHABER motors ensure that the prosthesis can grip without any problems, quickly and firmly and maintain a constant gripping force.

Functional prostheses are known to most of us only in science fiction films which give the artificial extremities superhuman strength. By contrast, bionic hand prostheses do not make the wearer a superhero in real life. But they can make many things possible for them which are normal for most people.

Intuitive movement

The Bebionic myoelectric prosthesis weighs between 400 and 600 grams and is about as heavy as a natural hand. It is controlled by small electrical signals in the body. These are generated by muscle contractions and can be measured with electrodes on the skin – the same way as an ECG in heart diagnostics. Two electrodes, that are integrated into the prosthesis shaft, detect the myoelectric signals and forward them to the control electronics. These signals are amplified and used to activate the five small electric motors (one for each finger) that move the fingers and thumb – the hand opens or closes itself. As a result, the strength of the muscle contraction controls the speed and the gripping force: a weak signal generates a slow movement, a strong signal generates a quick movement.
The muscles which are used to open and close the hand prosthesis are actually responsible for the movement of the wrist in a natural hand. Its wearer must learn that it now has a different function. “The human brain is unbelievably adaptable. After a short amount of time, people perform the movement intuitively like how car drivers step on the brake when they want to stop,” says Ted Varley, Technical Director at Steeper.

Additional motors for more control

The first myoelectric hand came onto the market at the start of the 1980s. They were driven by a single motor and only had a simple gripping mechanism: thumb, index and middle fingers could be closed for a pincer grip. Ring and small fingers were only available for cosmetic reasons and had no gripping force. This concept was fundamentally changed for the Bebionic hand about ten years ago. “We determined that people accept lower gripping force per finger if they get more flexibility,” explains Ted Varley. To control the individual fingers, each finger on the Bebionic hand is equipped with its own electric motor. The four motors for the fingers are located in the palm of the hand, the fifth in the thumb itself. Encoders are integrated into the motors which precisely detect the position of the finger at any time.
Thanks to individual control, the fingers can be arranged into a total of 14 different grip patterns. With the key grip, which moves the thumb up and down with the fingers flexed, you can hold flat items such as plates, keys or bank cards. With the hook grip, heavy loads of up to 25 kilograms can be carried, the outstretched index finger permits the use of keyboards and remote controls. With the power grip, the thumb is in the opposite position and all fingers close until they encounter resistance. This is used to clasp irregularly shaped objects such as wine glasses. “This position looks much more natural than a pincer grip. The grip is also more stable if all fingers are used,” stresses Varley.

Increased self-esteem

The bionic hand makes many everyday activities easier. “Actually, it often are the small things which become easier with the prosthesis. To sum up, it leads to a clearly improved quality of life,” explains Ted Varley. Furthermore, the artificial hand also has a psychological effect: “Many users report that their feeling of self worth has increased with the Bebionic as they encounter interest and fascination with their new high-tech prosthesis.”
In this context, the attractive design of the prosthesis also plays an important role. “Our approach was rather unusual in prosthetics with the development of the third generation of Bebionic: We first developed the housing and then searched for solutions such as how the individual components can be housed,” emphasises Varley. “Five years ago, this would not have been possible for the small hand – the technology wasn’t advanced enough.” Also, the DC-micromotors of series 1024 SR that were predestined for this application were still in the development phase when Steeper turned to FAULHABER with this project in 2013. The project teams on both sides then expedited the development of the motor series and hand prosthesis at the same time. Regular meetings of the STEEPER and FAULHABER development teams took place in Great Britain and Switzerland. The intermediary of the meetings and the exclusive sales partner of FAULHABER in Great Britain, Electro Mechanical Systems (EMS), also took part. This intensive cooperation ultimately resulted in a motor with an exceptional powervolume ratio and tailor-made drive for the thumb which has brought this intense cooperation during development to a successful conclusion.

Top marks for performance

The new DC-micromotor of the 1024 SR series is actually the best of its class and the most powerful for its size on the market. With a diameter of 10 mm and a length of 24 mm, it delivers a stall torque rating of 4.6 mNm. It offers a consistently high torque across the entire speed range as a result of the flat speed/torque curve. The strong performance, among others, is made possible by the development of a new coil design which contains 60 percent more copper than its predecessor and has been combined with a powerful rare-earth magnet. In order to make the movement as quiet as possible, the artificial hand uses tailor-made planetary gearheads of series 10/1. “A significant challenge was the development of the linear drive system which had to be integrated into the thumb”, says Tiziano Bordonzotti, Sales Engineer at FAULHABER MINIMOTOR. Thanks to high-precision 4 point bearings from FAULHABER’s subsidiary, Micro Precision Systems (MPS), it was possible to make the drive significantly shorter than the competition. The unique features of the 4 point bearing make it possible for it to withstand the high axial forces necessary for the application despite the smaller dimensions compared to alternative bearing systems. The entire thumb drive can withstand an axial force of up to 300 N with an overall length of less than 49 mm.
Ted Varley is excited by the result of the collaboration: “The Bebionic hand in size S is the most realistic myoelectric hand prosthesis on the market. It would not have been possible to realise this project without close cooperation with the committed project team of FAULHABER.”

The Bebionic myoelectric prosthesis weighs between 400 and 600 grams and is about as heavy as a natural hand.

Each finger is moved by its own electric motor.

New Slip Rings - Ethernet Series

Martedì, 26 Luglio 2016

www.servotecnica.com

Nuovi Slip Rings - Serie Ethernet
Our challenge here at Servotecnica is anticipating our customers’ needs and being ready for new requests.
Here are the ready solutions for electrical slip rings that can transfer Ethernet-based protocols like EtherNet/IP, ProfiNet, EtherCAT, Sercos III, PowerLink.
The new generation of SVTS A Series Slip Rings in Capsule version and the new series of SVTS C05 Series slip rings with through-hole are the response to the need to bring these types of transmissions to high frequency rotation. This is made possible by gold-gold technology - using, both for brushes and rings, a coating of the 2 elements in gold and to the special inner structure designed to minimise disturbances and coupling.
Our Slip Rings can operate with 100BaseT or 1000BaseT Ethernet at speeds of 100 MB/s and 1 GB/s, respectively. That's why our slip rings with E1M option use, for the 100 BASE-T solution, two twisted and shielded pairs with category CAT5E cables while, with the E1G option for Gigabit Ethernet transmissions, they use four twisted and shielded pairs in category CAT6A.
Thanks to the gold-gold technology, we can provide both digital and analogue signal circuits as well as power circuits in the same slip ring. There are up to 56 circuits in the SVTS A Series with 2, 6 and 8A currents and with voltages up to 240 VDC/AC. Being very small in diameter, they have a life of around 107 revolutions.
The SVTS C05 Series has a 38.1 mm through-hole with the opportunity to reach up to 48 2A signal circuits and 15A for power circuits, with voltages up to 600 VDC/AC; multi-strand brush technology also allows for a duration of around 8x107 revolutions.
The customisation possibilities are countless, from cable length to IP51 degree of protection up to IP65 or even IP67, from the ring body materials in ABS plastic or metal to the option of integrating both the electric ring and the fluid joint into a single element to 1 or more passages for liquids and gases, with the particularity of being able to simultaneously transmit power and electrical signals, liquids and gases, as well as optical signals via fibre.
Operating temperatures can also be a problem: hence solutions available that extend the operating temperature upwards or downwards.
Finally, explosion proof versions with ATEX certification are available.

New Innovative Technology

JVL closed-loop integrated stepper motors, QuickStep®, provide higher torque, faster acceleration, torque control, stall free operation and quieter movements than traditional step motor systems. QuickStep do this with greater efficiency and less motor heating because motor phase current are regulated up and down according to need. Performance of JVL closed-loop steppers are similar to servo motors, but with higher torque and often without need of gearbox, resulting in a more inexpensive solution. Design safety factors have always been high for stepper motors to ensure stall-free operation – now with QuickStep closed-loop control design can be very close to the limit resulting in even lower costs. QuickStep is a true closed-loop control system that compensates step angle errors during a movement and correct errors within a full step. If load becomes too high speed is lowered and position errors will always stay within two full-steps. Smart digital design and very high update rates (36 MHz) means there is no need of any manual adjustment or setup. It works like a perfect stepper motor benefitting from the servo motor technology.

100% Automatic Setup No need to adjust any parameters. JVL closed-loop stepper motors always work fast and efficient to adapt motor to application. Extremely high update frequency: 36 MHz (where other suppliers have down to only 1 Hz update time). Calculations are made in FPGA and not in slow microprocessors.
Energy Saving Like servo motors QuickStep always runs at lowest possible current. This reduces the need for cooling and results in a more "green” solution.
Stall-Free Operation And No Losing Of Steps  By always monitoring the actual rotor position, the control algorithm ensures that the motor does not lose any steps and it cannot stall. If the rotor is blocked mechanically it just continues right away when the obstruction is removed.
Torque Control Mode The torque can be adjusted "on the fly” by the user or by the motor’s embedded PLC program. Applications that were previously impossible for a stepper motor can now be achieved.
Higher Acceleration & Speed Stall-free operation means you do not need to worry about setting the motor to a very high acceleration ramp. The motor simply moves the load with the highest possible acceleration at any given time. The result is a much faster machine with more cycles per day.
Factory Loaded Linearization The motor and encoder are calibrated during factory production in order to reach a very high mechanical precision.
Older Motors Are Supported The Closed-loop control mode is backward compatible with older motors equipped with H2-type encoders. By updating the firmware, the user’s application can benefit from the stall-free operation with very high accelerations and lower power consumption.
Full Torque Available The motor is capable of using the full torque according to the torque-velocity curve and therefore the need to have a safety overhead when dimensioning the machine is much less. Smaller motor = lower costs.

Advantages compared to open loop stepper motors

  • Position feedback and control
  • Fast and easy commissioning. No tuning needed

DSTI Plays Role in Astrophysics Research from South Pole

DSTI Plays Role in Astrophysics Research from South Pole
Most people are unaware that less than a quarter mile from the South Pole lie some of the world's most powerful radio telescopes.

Running year-round, they scan the sky observing very faint light from the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). The CMB is the oldest light visible in the Universe, a remnant glow from the very early times when the Universe was much hotter and much denser than it is today.

BICEP3, the 3rd generation in this series of instruments measuring the polarization of the CMB, requires rotary union technology to pass ultra-high purity helium gas from a compressor on the ground to a pulse-tube cryogenic cooler located above the telescope's rotating mount. Although the South Pole is bitterly cold, BICEP3 still needs to cool its detectors to a fraction of a degree above absolute zero (-273° C / -460° F) to operate properly.

During the first season of BICEP3 operation at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole station, BICEP3 was using a basic 2-channel DSTI rotary union. Unfortunately, that particular rotary union was not quite adequate for the very demanding application of passing high pressure helium, a gas notoriously hard to keep leak-tight, through the continuously rotating union.

As a result, the rotary union displayed a high leak rate requiring constant bleeding of helium back into the system for replenishment. Despite being 99.999% pure, enough contamination accumulated in the pulse-tube cooler to cause performance degradation requiring additional processes to get the system back up and running resulting in a month of downtime.

Research Scientist Denis Barkats from Harvard University partnered with DSTI to solve this problem with an upgraded 4-channel DSTI rotary union. The 4-channel union significantly outperformed the 2-channel union by effectively using the outer two channels as buffers for the two inner working channels.
"DSTI was incredibly responsive when we communicated these problems with them and were able to deliver new rotary unions with spare units without delay which is critical when working in the short austral summer season at the South Pole station," says Denis Barkats.

www.servotecnica.com

The New AMP-43740 4-Axis Servo Amplifier

Venerdì, 18 Dicembre 2015

The New AMP-43740 4-Axis Servo Amplifier
Galil is proud to introduce the 1200W AMP-43740, a new high power multi-axis servo drive with sinusoidal commutation. Based on Galil’s 600W AMP-43540, the new AMP-43740 is designed for applications with brushless motors that require greater continuous or peak current.

Internal Amplifier and Drive Comparison

The AMP-43740 contains four 1200W digital transconductance amplifiers for driving brushless motors with sinusoidal commutation, a 100% increase in power rating from the 600W AMP-43540. Each amplifier in the AMP-43740 can drive motors operating at up to 16 Amps continuous and 30 Amps peak at 20-80 VDC allowing the use of larger brushless motors to meet the needs of a wide variety of applications.
User-programmable gain settings, a switching and sampling frequency of 20kHz, and closed current loop bandwidth up to 2.5 kHz make that the AMP-43740 a high quality, easy to use amplifier. This amplifier also offers protection from over-voltage, under-voltage, over-current, short-circuit, and over temperature conditions.

With the AMP-43740 the user will benefit from the inherent characteristics of sinusoidal commutation resulting in continuous commutation with no unwanted torque ripple. As an additional benefit of sinusoidal commutation, Hall sensors are generally not required with Galil’s initialization commands.

The AMP-43740 four axis drive is available as an option for Galil’s DMC-500x0 EtherCAT Master and DMC-40x0 Accelera motion controllers. The drive resides inside the controller's enclosure in order to minimize space, cost, wiring, and setup time. Two 4-axis drives can be used witth an 8-axis controller for larger axis count applications.

3 grandi piccole novità da Faulhaber: 1727cxr, 2668...CR e 20/1R

Venerdì, 04 Dicembre 2015

3 grandi piccole novità da Faulhaber: 1727cxr, 2668...CR e 20/1R
Addition to CXR series - 1727cxr DC Micromotor

FAULHABER is expanding its range of drives in the medium power range with the new 1727…CXR DC-micromotor, and is adding an extremely compact drive to the CXR series. A powerful neodymium magnet gives the graphite-commutated motor a high power density with a continuous torque of 4.9 mNm. It generates this power in a housing that is just 17 mm in diameter and 27 mm in length. The temperature range in which it can be used is from -30 to +100°C. The CXR series includes DC motors with an extremely attractive price/performance ratio. As with the other drives of this series, the 1727…CXR can be combined with encoders and with precision gearheads from a coordinated product range. It can be optionally actuated with the SC 1801 speed controller or the MCDC 3002 motion controller for speed control or positioning. The compact dimensions of the 1727…CXR and its performance data open up a wide range of potential applications. The motor is ideal for hand instruments in dental technology, for tattooing machines or as a high-performance servo drive in automation and robotics.

More power in your hand - 2669...CR DC Micromotor

The new 2668 … CR DC motor from FAULHABER offers considerably more power than comparable drives, and is the most powerful copper-graphite commutated DC-micromotor in its size class on the market. Thanks to a bigger NdFeB magnet and a high copper content in the winding, it supplies a rated torque of 70 mNm. As a result, it weighs just 189 g with a diameter of 26 mm. Furthermore, it reaches full power extremely quickly with its high pulse torque. The 2668 … CR is thus especially well suited for professional high-performance tools such as pruning shears or motorised screwdrivers. The copper-graphite brushes of the motor are characterised by their outstanding stability and low wear. The housing is made of coated steel. The motor can be combined with high-resolution optical or magnetic encoders. As well as handheld devices, it is also suitable for many other applications such as in aerospace, robotics, medical technology, in special machinery construction, metering systems and automation solutions.

Triple the power - 20/1R Planetary gearhead

FAULHABER in introducing the most powerful power transmission technology in its size class to the market with the new 20/1R planetary gearhead: A diameter of 20 mm allows the stainless steel gearhead to achieve continuous torque of 800 mNm, and up to 1100 mNm for short periods during interval operation. Following intensive development with a comprehensive series of tests, the power output was able to be more than tripled in comparison to previous models. The input speed reaches 12,000 rpm. The 20/1R can be combined with DC, brushless motors and stepper motors with a diameter of 17 to 22 mm. The output shaft of the 20/1R has no axial play thanks to the pretensioned ball bearing. The gearhead is available with one to five stages, and the span of the 16 possible reduction gear ratios ranges from 3.71:1 to 1526:1. There is also a choice between the normal temperature range of -10 to +125°C and a low temperature variant with -45 to +100°C. The typical temperature range for planetary gearheads made from metal is therefore extended considerably. Numerous product variants, including an autoclavable version, makes it easy to adapt to completely different applications. The connection of the new 20/1R planetary gearhead is compatible with its predecessor, the 20/1. When upgrading, the previous gearhead can be replaced with the new model without further changes.

New-TM18-iron-core-linear-motor-TECNOTION

Lunedì, 30 Novembre 2015

New-TM18-iron-core-linear-motor-TECNOTION
Almelo, Netherlands, November 2015 - The rare earths present in the permanent magnets of linear motors are a cost-intensive factor. Against this background, the linear motor specialist Tecnotion expands its product portfolio with a new iron core motor: the TM18 is the fourth in the TM series, producing the same force as motors containing larger, more expensive magnets.

With the addition of the TM18 even applications which require the force from larger motor series are now covered by this new motor. These applications no longer need wider and therefore more expensive magnetplates.
With the 336mm long coil unit of the TM18, a continuous force of 360N and an ultimate force of 720N can be achieved. In addition, there is the possibility to couple two motors on the magnet track, which increases the available continuous power to 720N. The dimensions of the motor are compact: the total installation height including magnet plate is only 40mm, the width of the magnet plate is only 50mm. Speeds of 10 m/s are possible.
Especially in applications with long strokes that require long magnet tracks the TM18 represents a cost-effective alternative. The potential applications are endless: due to the low cogging one can think of use in industrial printers. But machinetooling or cutting systems are also perfect examples where the TM18 can be used.

New waterproof Electric Rotary Joints

The SVTS B IP65 has been designed and realised in order to satisfy a specific application: the power-supply of the heating resistance and the probes signal detection aboard of the rotating weld-and-cut blades for flowpack packaging machines.

In a later stage, thanks to its great features, the high reliability, the long lasting time and cost-effectiveness, this slip ring series has been used also on many others kind of applications, such as small wind turbines, carousels, etc.

Over the years has arisen the demand for a special variation that was protected against fluids, due to the need of washing these machines with water jets or to withstand open-air exposure.

For this reason, Servotecnica has developed the SRC032M series with IP65 protection, available with 3 and 5 circuits and faston connectors.

What is a Rotary Union?

Lunedì, 07 Settembre 2015

www.dsti.com

What is a Rotary Union?
A rotary union or swivel joint is a mechanism used to transfer fluid (under pressure or vacuum) from a stationary inlet to a rotating outlet, preserving and isolating the fluid connection.

Also referred to as rotary joints, rotary couplings, fluid swivels or swivel joints; rotary unions are engineered to endure a large range of temperatures, pressures and speeds for a variety of conditions and environments.

Rotary unions typically function by connecting to an input and securing onto another mechanism while allowing a moving connection to be preserved.

Rotary unions are utilized in a wide range of applications; from miniature rotary unions for the semiconductor industry, to large and rugged-duty rotary unions for industrial applications.

Galil Controller Used in Diagnostic CT Scan Imaging System

Venerdì, 29 Magio 2015

Galil Controller Used in Diagnostic CT Scan Imaging System

Galil Controller Used in Diagnostic CT Scan Imaging System to Assess the Structural Integrity of Corrugated Metal Pipe. Corrugated Metal Pipe (CMP) is used in a wide variety of transportation and storm water management settings around North America. The pipes come in all different shapes and sizes for culverts, sewers, gravity drains and the like. CMP is considered a flexible conduit to engineers and as such, is reliant on the surrounding soil for the majority of its structural strength. In other words, CMP sitting on a flatbed truck can be deflected by a human jumping on it, however, properly surrounded with soil, the structure will bear the load of a transport trailer.  As time goes on, these CMP installations need to be assessed to allow for proper maintenance.  In the past, assessments were typically subjective, involving visual appraisals and acoustic assessment tests which can be inconclusive. The more conclusive tests used to be destructive to the actual pipe wall, which would worsen the structural integrity.   Figure shows a BCT scan of a Corrugated Metal Pipe The solution to this problem was developed by Inversa Systems in 2009. The company developed the first CAT scan for infrastructure, known as Backscatter Computed Tomography (BCT), which is used to look through the CMP wall without disturbing the pipe or soil to verify if the pipe is adequately supported. A BCT scan uses backscattered gamma radiation to measure the density of a point in space relative to the adjacent points. A relative map of density is created, producing a picture of the material within the scan field. This provides an accurate, objective, and non-destructive assessment of the structural integrity of CMP and its surrounding soil. With the appropriate structural assessment, maintenance decisions are made accordingly, and rehabilitation efforts can be done at a fraction of the cost of replacing the same asset while avoiding service disruption. Figure shows source collimator and detector array focusing with linear axes providing the BCT scan To accomplish this, Inversa Systems uses Galil's 4-axis DMC-4040 with internal two-phase drives.  Two axes control two linear actuators to complete the scan.  The other two axes control two rotation tables, one is the source collimator, and the other is a detector array.  These two rotation tables work in tandem to provide a scan from both sides of the desired area.  The source collimator will focus the scan deeper and deeper with each successive pass to provide a complete depth analysis of the structure.   As the collimated beam moves through the CMP and into the adjacent soil, it reaches a focal point that the detector collimator is aligned to receive as backscatter.  The radiation count, after some initial discrimination, is sent to the Galil controller.  The DMC-4040 assigns ‘x’ and ‘y’ address information based on the angle that the beam is entering the material and the distance between source and detector.  The combination of count and address information allows for generation of a complete real time image of density, including the metal pipe and material around the pipe.  Lack of density indicates a void space which verifies an unsupported region of pipe. The DMC-4040 presented key features to allow for the high-performance and easy implementation and operation of the BCT scanner.  The controller uses simple ASCII based communication allowing the development of a Windows-based interface to collect and distribute the data, and the integrated LCD screen on the DMC-4040 enhances the benefits of on-site troubleshooting.  Lastly, the fast processing power of the Accelera controllers allows for multiple processes to run effectively in parallel using multi-threading.   With Inversa Systems' pioneering research in bringing the diagnostic capability of a medical CAT scan to infrastructure and Galil's high-performance and cost-effective motion controllers, condition assessment and asset management is possible in a setting once deemed impossible or impractical.

Incorporating all of the features of our flagship Accelera series controller and designed with compatibility and flexibility in mind, the DMC-500x0 allows integration of remote EtherCAT drives into new and existing applications with just a handful of configuration commands. The DMC-500x0 is offered in 1 through 8 axis formats. Axes 1 - 4 can be configured as either local or EtherCAT drives while axes 5 – 8 can be configured for additional EtherCAT drives. Unique to the motion control industry, this ability to mix and match local and EtherCAT drives on the same controller provides increased flexibility for any application. In addition, the DMC-500x0 is fully compatible with Galil’s internal servo and stepper motor amplifiers as well as third party external drives. Once enabled, an EtherCAT axis replaces a local axis and can be controlled in the same manner. This transparency means access to Galil’s full library of coordinated motion functions that can be mapped to any combination of local and EtherCAT axes. Standard modes of motion include Jogging, Point to Point, Electronic Gearing and Cam, Linear and Vector Interpolation, Contour, and PVT modes. EtherCAT drives can be configured in software to close the PID control loop on the controller or on the drive. In the first mode, torque commands are sent to the motor amplifier after closing the control loop using Galil’s on board PID control algorithm. This mode allows access to the Galil’s standard PID control loop features, including advanced PID compensation, velocity feedforward, acceleration feedforward, integrator limits, notch filter, low pass filter and backlash compensation. In the second mode, the servo control loop is closed on the EtherCAT drive with the Galil controller sending motion profile commands at rates of up to 2.5 kHz on a 1-4 axis controller. Standard opto-isolated inputs for each local axis include a forward limit, reverse limit and homing input. The controller also features 8 uncommitted opto-isolated inputs and 8 uncommitted opto-isolated high power outputs. The DMC-500x0 includes 8 uncommitted analog inputs, allowing the controller to interface with analog sensors such as joysticks and temperature sensors. Inputs from two separate encoders are available for each local servo axis. Local auxiliary encoder inputs are also available for axes configured for EtherCAT, providing access to Galil’s dual feedback PID control loop. The DMC-500x0 can be used with Galil’s newest software package, GalilSuite; simplifying system set up, controller programming and servo tuning. Also included is access to the GalilTools API, allowing development of powerful host applications in multiple languages and operating systems. Like all Galil controllers, the DMC-500x0 uses Galil’s easy to learn two letter ASCII command language. Configuring and programming the controller is simple and intuitive with English-like commands such as TP for Tell Position and EU for EtherCAT network Up. Built in subroutines and error monitoring make development of robust applications a straightforward affair. The DMC-500x0 comes with one CAT5e Ethernet port for communication with a host PC and one CAT5e EtherCAT port to communicate with EtherCAT drive(s). Multiple EtherCAT drives can be linked together in a daisy chain configuration and connected to the controller’s CAT5e EtherCAT port, simplifying wiring and decreasing setup time. Two RS-232 ports are also provided for communication with a host PC and peripherals. The DMC-500x0 is packaged in a compact metal enclosure measuring 8.1” x 7.25” x 1.72” and operates from a single 20 – 80 volt DC supply. Currently, the following EtherCAT drives are supported: Yaskawa Sigma-5 SGDV-R90FE1A AMC DZEANTU-020B080 Copley XenusPLUS XEL-230-36 Panasonic Minas A5B Sanyo-Denki SANMOTION R RS2A01A2HA5 Support for additional drives will be added in the future. AMK reduces wiring in half

(pressebox) (Kirchheim/Teck, 09.01.2014) Two become one: in the future AMK will also offer its DYNASYN synchronous servo motors in a single-cable version. With this version, the servo specialists from Kircheim/Teck, Germany, are cutting the cabling and installation effort for machine construction practically in half. The new wiring technology is tailor-made for motor feedback systems with Hiperface DSL. This new development combines the voltage supply and the digital encoder signal on one cable. As a result, the encoder cable required up to now, along with its installation, can be eliminated completely. Other advantages of the single-cable wiring technology result from reductions in mass. Having fewer cables expands the options for space-saving machine designs because slimmer cable ducts are possible. The weight reduction also affects mobile cable handlers, in particular, in the form of reduced intrinsic mass, which ultimately leads to lower motor ratings and higher energy efficiency - especially during constant reversing of positioning applications. The new fully-digital Hiperface DSL motor feedback interface is available in the AMKASYN KE/KW central inverter system in conjunction with the KW-R26 controller card. AMK also views this as advanced technology, because it saves space, connectors, and installation effort and also affords more possibilities for machine construction. Besides the digitally modulated feedback signals, the data of other sensors, such as sensors for monitoring winding temperatures, can be transmitted via the feedback protocol. Another advantage: from the vantage point of Functional Safety, Hiperface DSL is certified for applications up to SIL 3 or Performance Level e.

Higher performance with lower consumption

Electronic fuel injection in UAVsSmall and miniature aircraft, also known as UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles), require reliable propulsion systems in order to achieve extended flight times with minimal quantities of fuel. Previously, the only option available for fuel delivery to the engine was a carburetor. The latter, however, is not able to provide an optimum fuel mix for all of the various phases of flight. A newly developed miniaturized electronic fuel injection (EFI) system designed specially for small combustion engines now provides the benefits of fuel injection, long enjoyed in larger engines, for small UAVs. The most striking characteristics of this system are higher performance combined with reduced consumption and considerably increased reliability. Microdrives are used to power the fuel pump to ensure the correct pressure in the fuel system. The properties required include high performance density together with low weight and superior reliability. 6.5 billion kilometers to the workplace

At the end of May 2014, the Rosetta space probe will swing into an orbit around the comet 67P/Churyumov‐Gerasimenko in order to, after more closely approaching it in August, map its surface and thus prepare for the landing of Philae. On 12th November, this ballistic lander, weighing 100 kg, touched down on the comet and began experiments intended to provide information about its composition. This lander has 14 FAULHABER drive systems which defied the harsh conditions of the 10 year long journey through the vacuum and incredibly low temperatures of space, in order to deliver valuable information on the creation and history of our solar system. 14 FAULHABER Drive System work on board of Philae

An almost incredible degree of accuracy

An almost incredible degree of accuracy

Exact positioning for astronomy and molecular research. Why is it much warmer one million kilometres away from the sun than on its surface? Even today, we still do not have a definitive answer to this seemingly simple astronomy question. Two satellites, set to go into orbit in 2017 in a formation accurate down to the last millimetre, may be able to help solve the mystery. One satellite will cover the sun, so that the other will be able to observe the hot solar corona undisturbed. In order to install the measuring instruments for this incredible feat of precision, the technicians at the European Space Agency (ESA) are using a hexapod. Manufactured by SYMETRIE, a high-tech company based in the South of France, the hexapod is powered by motors produced by FAULHABER. During a solar eclipse, it is possible to see the solar corona or aureole surrounding the darkened surface of the sun with the naked eye. Comprised almost entirely of ionised plasma, it extends into space to a distance of up to three solar radii. With a temperature of several million Kelvin, it is so hot that the 5778 Kelvin on the sun's surface almost seem cool in comparison. Up until now, the reason for this enormous difference could not be investigated in detail. On Earth, large parts of its radiation are swallowed up by the atmosphere, while in space, observation is subject to technological limitations: the surface of the sun must be covered so that it does not outshine the corona, however, with the equipment currently available, this means that the part of the solar corona that is close to the sun is also hidden. A hair's breadthFor this reason, the ESA plans, as part of its StarTiger programme, to launch two satellites in 2017 that are set to travel in a unique formation. They will orbit the Earth at a distance of just 150 metres to each other – and at a speed of several kilometres per second, that is truly the proverbial hair's breadth. The shield of one of the satellites is set to cover the sun in such a way that the instruments on the other will be able to capture the radiation of the corona to a degree not previously possible. To facilitate optimum alignment of both satellites as well as the instrumentation on board, the ESA technicians have simulated the conditions of space travel at the Laboratory of Astrophysics in Marseilles, France. A coronagraph, which is set to capture the radiation of the solar corona on the satellite that is in the shade, has been mounted on a BREVA hexapod (a "six-legged" robot) manufactured by SYMETRIE. In each leg, a brushless DC-Micromotor is installed with an integrated encoder. By extending and retracting the legs, the platform mounted on top can be adjusted freely in any direction. Thanks to the outstanding dynamics and power density of FAULHABER drives even in the smallest spaces, as well as the high encoder resolution, even large masses can be positioned quickly, reliably and precisely.A mirror for the next HubbleThanks to this freedom of movement, the ESA technicians have been able to simulate a variety of positions for the "flying machines" in relation to one another. The hexapod is distinguished by a number of features that make it ideal for the task at hand, as SYMETRIE managing director Olivier Lapierre explains: "It performs - under the most limited tolerances - the minimum movements required with exact precision, yet is also extremely rigid and can thus accurately maintain the specified position." A further strength of the product is its sophisticated software that ensures smooth component interaction and allows, for example, any virtual centre of rotation to be specified for the platform, and particularly gentle sequences of movement to be achieved. These features of the SYMETRIE precision hexapods are also in use in other space programmes such as the James Webb Space Telescope, which is set to replace the famous Hubble telescope in 2018, as well as in the GAIA project aimed at mapping the Milky Way. In each of these projects, hexapods are being used to mount optical units. Mr. Lapierre describes a typical task as follows: "The hexapod helps to adjust a mirror in the specified position with submicrometer precision." As is the case with StarTiger, an almost incredible degree of accuracy is required: the Webb telescope should theoretically be able to detect a single candle on one of the moons of Jupiter. The most powerful X-ray beamHowever, the BORA hexapod used for the GAIA project was not originally developed for astronomy, but for the observation of extremely small objects. It originated as part of a collaboration with the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) in Grenoble, France. The synchrotron in the French Alps accelerates electrons almost up to the speed of light, causes them to collide, and generates the world’s most powerful X-ray beam. It is around ten thousand times more powerful than the output of a medical X-ray device, yet as fine as a human hair. This beam is used to analyse a whole range of samples and materials, from semi-conductor crystal structures through to molecular movements in living cells. "Our hexapods are used at the ESRF to move calibration mirrors and samples into specific positions and to accurately maintain those positions thanks to their excellent stability", explains Olivier Lapierre. Regardless of whether we are looking into the infinity of space or at detailed structures at molecular level, the essential requirements that a positioning hexapod must meet remain the same: maximum manoeuvrability and precision together with absolute stability. Additional specifications may be added, depending on the application. Both for ESA and at the ESRF, a considerable amount of work is performed in a vacuum or cleanroom environment where the equipment must obviously also meet corresponding requirements. Space is also often at a premium, with the result that mini-hexapods are required. The ideal solution for positioning in the smallest of spaces is the BREVA model's little brother, BORA. With a footprint diameter of 212 millimetres, it is also just 145 millimetres tall. Despite these almost minuscule dimensions, it can move a load of up to 10 kilogrammes at a resolution of 0.1 micrometres on its directional axes and of 2 microrads on the rotational axes. "The FAULHABER motors play an essential role in our hexapods", explains Olivier Lapierre. "They offer the best combination of compact sizing and product quality on the market." A new compact drive with integrated CAN bus control

A new compact drive with integrated CAN bus control

From track to track more efficiency in agricultural technology In order to optimize the dosage of the fertiliser or the seeds, KAG has developed a new drive with integrated CAN bus control. Meanwhile, the combination of motor and gearbox with integrated electronics has successfully passed all testing phases. Currently, the pilot series is in the field test. Thus, a KAG DC motor with a universal multi-master field bus system is available for the first time, where the software can be adapted individually for each manufacturer with little effort – and this motor thrills with many other advantages. Today, newest technologies allow an ever faster and more and more efficient work in the agricultural sector. KAG supports this progress with drives that are already established in the international agricultural technology and works with full stretch on innovative developments in order to accelerate work processes and to reduce the energy demand at the same time. Custom-made solution “Our current project is about a gear motor with integrated CAN bus control, which is responsible for the efficient dosing of the seeds in a singe-grain sowing machine”, explains Andreas Schwerdtfeger, graduate engineer and developer at Kählig Antriebstechnik GmbH. “The objective is that the work tool puts the grain of seed on the field to the exact position within a very short time.” This automation process is carried out by evaluation of sensors and by special (motor) software, which communicates with the superordinated “job computers”. “What is special about our new gear motor with i42DC is that the integrated CAN bus control is based on the international standardised protocol EN 50325-4, and that we can integrate customer requests into the software. In this way, besides the custom-made motor (+gear) solution with, for instance, a high IP protection and/or stainless steel shaft, further possibilities for the adaptation to customer requirements are available.” This universal electronics, serving as an interface, can be adapted by means of Software modifications to the customizable control of each manufacturer. Thus, the seed placement on the field becomes significantly more precise, fast and efficient. Simple assembly tanks to Plug and Play “Another big advantage of the electrification in agricultural machinery for this project is, besides the precise approach to each individual seed row, the modular fixation by ‘Plug and Play'”. “The drive can be assembled to the customer’s application directly out of the shipping box: push in the plug and get started! Previous hydraulic motors could contaminate the ground with oil in the event of a fault. In case that an electrical motor should ever fail, a simple exchange is a matter of minutes. Our drives have a very high quality and thus are extremely reliable. We set ourselves apart by the precise manufacturing of individual components, and so we realise a high accuracy of fit of the components, which supports the function of sealing elements and so protects the motor against the penetration of water”, tells Schwerdtfeger. The corrosion resistance, which is already very high (for example, motor housings are not chromed but realised in cathodic dip painting (CDP)) can still be increased by varnishing upon customer request. The All-Purpose linear motor : TL series

The All-Purpose linear motor : TL series The mid-range linear motor of Tecnotion, the TL series are characterized by their excellent ratio between size and performance, which makes the TL very useful in a variety of applications for different industries. Next to the good values regarding the power density of the motors, a general advantage of the TL is the large number of available types. With coil lengths from 146mm up to 468mm, continuous force is covered from 200N to 800N and peak forces from 400N to 1600N. In addition, depending on the requirements, a maximum speed up to 7 m/s can be achieved by choosing the right type of the two coil windings available. Depending on the positioning system used, the TL can be driven in the Submicron Range and has an extremely low attraction force between the coils and the magnets. By default, all engines of the TL- series are equipped with channels for optional water cooling, which makes the TL particularly interesting for thermally demanding applications. Iron Core TL- series In addition, depending on the application, the values of the continuous force increase around 5%. This makes the TL suited for nearly any application, e.g. for the long travel lengths of large digital printers or in AOI applications. But also in water jet cutting and laser cutting systems, the TL has been successfully applied. For more information and specifications about the TL series please mail to sales@tecnotion.com. Product Launch:New Fieldbus interface unit

On June 2, 2014, Magnescale (President Toru Fujimori) officially launched the “MG50”, a new Fieldbus interface unit compatible with our Tough Sensor lineup, for open network applications. Our current “Tough Sensor” series digital gauges (released March, 2013) provide high rigidity and high precision, and feature digital tolerance functions with intuitive and simple setup in an extremely slim shape. Since the launch of the “Tough Sensor”, many of our customers have requested the function of transferring measurement data to a PLC and aggregated data to be calculated freely. The “MG50” fieldbus interface unit aggregates measurement data to a PLC, via EtherCAT or CC-Link, with a maximum of 30 connectable gauges (EtherCAT) per transfer unit. By using a function block for each PLC (available soon), basic calculations can be performed such as maximum, minimum, thickness and so on. Furthermore, we launched our new “MT20” interpolator which is used when connecting our “DT” series (general purpose model) gauges to our “MF10” counter module, thus increasing the range of our Tough Sensor lineup.

DC‐Micromotors series 3890...CR

The development of the new 3890…CR series is based on the successful motor concept of the CR DC-Micromotors series with Graphite Commutation from FAULHABER. A very powerful neodymium magnet and particularly high copper content in the winding of its FAULHABER rotor provide the compact drive with an enormous amount of power. For drives in autonomous robot systems, electro-mechanical orthoses and exoskeletons or power tools like the electric loppers, high dynamics and torque in the smallest possible space are central requirements. In addition to the one-of-a-kind power density (rated torque per volume), the high efficiency of the 3890…CR series is also a decisive factor. Thanks to the further development of the commutation system, the motor also achieves high service life values even with extremely heavy loads. The coreless rotor also ensures cogging-free, precise synchronisation with very low energy consumption. In short: the 3890…CR series offers everything required for use in challenging power applications. The new 3890…CR DC-Motors series is available as standard with four nominal voltages: 18 V, 24 V, 36 V and 48 V. A continuous torque of up to 224 mNm is thereby achieved as well. The short-term torque, required for many applications, is much higher. With no-load speeds of just over 5,000 rpm, the motors are optimally tailored to combination with FAULHABER Precision Gearheads. The standard drive can be combined with an IE3-1024 (L) three-channel encoder or optionally with optical encoders from the HEDx series for applications with precise speed controllers or positioning tasks.

Motor with EtherCat communication

The two companies Dr. Fritz Faulhaber GmbH & Co. KG from Schönaich Germany and Technosoft SA from Neuchâtel Switzerland have combined their skills and knowledge to produce one of the world’s smallest Intelligent Motor’s for speed and position control with EtherCAT communication, which complies with CoE (CAN application protocol over EtherCAT). The motor is based on the highly successful 32....BX4 Brushless DC 4 pole technology Servomotors using the system FAULHABER® ironless stator, a dynamically balanced rotor, resulting in a no cogging output, which is ideal for low inertia loads. The controller is of modular design and compact construction for high reliability and incorporates the iPOS4808 controller which utilises the Technosoft MotionChip™ technology and offers 7 I/Os. The configuration, tuning and local programming of the iPOS drive can easily be done using Technosoft’s powerful graphical platform EasyMotion Studio. The position sensor is absolute single-turn providing 4096 counts per revolution for accurate speed and position control, down to 5 arc minutes. Alongside the EtherCAT version there are two CAN versions. The standard CANopen in accordance to the CiA 301, 305 and 402 profiles and The TMLCAN protocol. TML (Technosoft Motion Language) opens the possibility to use the powerful motion controller, allowing it to operate as an independent intelligent device. As an example, to customise any homing routine to match the application needs. Stand-alone single or multi-axis applications with communication between drives without the need of a CAN master is possible while various types of CAN masters are as well supported with an extended set of Technosoft Motion Control Libraries. This Intelligent Motor has a maximum speed of 6,000 rpm and a stall torque of 97mNM, which is achieved from a motor with a diameter of 32mm and the maximum length of the integrated unit is a mere 92.8mm. The controller is housed in an oblong, which is 46.5mm x 67mm, with a depth of 26mm. There are six families of Faulhaber Gearheads that are available for fitting to the motor, depending on the requirements of the application. An Intelligent Motor can be used in many applications, but it has been developed for medical analysis and dosing machines, pick and place and welding robots, instrumentation and optical equipment, unmanned military vehicles, packaging bottling and labelling machines.

MCST 3601 drive electronics for stepper motors

Searching the multitude of available programmable motion controllers for a controller that is ideally suited to miniaturised stepper motors with phase currents of sometimes less than 100 mA was once a real challenge. The MCST 3601 series has now emerged from the cooperation between FAULHABER and Trinamic GmbH, the motion controller specialist for stepper motors. This controller is compact and flexible and, above all, is perfectly suited to the whole range of FAULHABER micro stepper motors. The series, which is equipped with a microcontroller and a driver, can precisely regulate phase currents from 10 mA to 1.1 A and, at the same time, can be operated with a supply voltage that can vary between 9 and 36 VDC. Thanks to simple and fast communication with a PC via USB 2.0, all types of movements can be programmed using the available software. The ten inputs and outputs also allow external variables to be taken into consideration. Since the controller is designed as a test electronics system, users can adopt the predefined architecture according to their requirements and integrate the components in the platform of their specific industrial application.Furthermore, the MCST 3601 series can actuate stepper motors in micro stepping mode. In this operating mode, up to 256 micro steps can be programmed per full step. This allows the resolution of the controlled rotary or linear movement to be increased considerably and/or the vibrations caused by the motor to be reduced. This possibility will be welcomed in optics applications in particular as here work is performed at resolutions in the micrometre range.

Brushless DC-Servomotor Series 2057...BHS

The new FAULHABER 2057…BHS are designed to address the specific requirements of the medical and dental hand piece markets. The high efficiency slotless design features smooth speed control with a wide continuous duty speed range up to 40000 rpm while remaining cool to the touch. The motors are capable of handling intermittent overload conditions to address highly dynamic motion over shorter cycle times. Low vibration which reduces user fatigue and low audible noise are ideal for long periods of use in sensitive medical and dental patient environments. The new motors come standard with digital hall sensors and analog hall sensor feedback is available on request. This option is ideal to eliminate the need for an additional encoder for slower speed operation for dental implant or endoscopic positioning applications which can also significantly reduce cabling complexity within the handpiece itself. Preloaded ball bearings insure that the motors are able to withstand the radial (22N) and axial loads (75N) in a hand piece. The extremely long service life can be extended even more through the easy replacement of the front bearing.A wide variety of high precision gearheads, high resolution magnetic and optical encoders and drive electronics are available in order to complete the drive system.

Brushless DC-Servomotor Series 3274...BP4

In the fight for high performance with minimum weight, FAULHABER with the development of its series3274 BP4 has put a new champion in the ring. The brushless DC servomotor, measuring 32 mm in diameter and 74 mm in length, has a huge continuous torque of 165 mNm. Furthermore, it weighs in at just under 320 g, which is half that of conventional motors with comparable power. The four-pole brushless DC servomotor is ideal for applications in which high power and dynamic start/stop operation with the lowest possible total weight is an important factor, for example in link drives of humanoid robots, electric grippers used in process automation or high-performance traction drives used in inspection robotics. The 3274 BP4 is overload-resistant and operates without wear-prone mechanical commutation. As a result, its operational lifetime is many times longer than that of a conventional DC micromotor. The slope of the motor characteristic curve is just 3 rpm/mNm with a stall torque of 2.7 Nm. The 3274 BP4 can reliably deliver what the application demands even under the harshest ambient conditions, such as at low temperatures or high mechanical loads (e.g. in aerospace applications). This is made possible by, among other things, a robust stainless steel housing and the omission of adhesives which are otherwise usually used for assembly. One particularly interesting feature of this motor series is the high flexibility in its design. The FAULHABER series 3274 BP4 is equipped as standard with digital hall sensors. High-resolution optical and magnetic encoders can be attached simply to the rear multifunction flange. As an option, the motor is also available with analog (linear) hall sensors that can replace an encoder in many application cases. Finally, a large selection of performance-optimised precision gearheads rounds off the complete drive system.
